Take one room at a time.
Walk through the rooms involved in the project and list the belongings that need to leave. Separate the things you will use while the work takes place from the things that can wait. Photograph furniture before dismantling it so you can remember how it goes together.
Keep small fittings together.
Use labeled bags for screws, brackets and other removable pieces. Keep each bag with the matching item in a way that will not damage its surface. Check that furniture is suitable for dismantling, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Store dry, protected belongings.
Clean and fully dry items before wrapping. Choose covers appropriate to the material and take care with fragile corners during transport. Sensitive fabrics and finishes may need specific conditions; ask about the actual environment before making your choice.
Allow for a changing schedule.
Understand the rental period and notice requirements rather than assuming you can collect everything on a fixed date. Confirm access arrangements before booking your vehicle and leave a clear path to the furniture you plan to retrieve first.
Plan the return.
Check with your contractor when the room is ready for furniture, especially where finishes need time to cure. Bring items back in the order the room will be used, and keep the box inventory until everything has been unpacked.
